Post In-Ground Decay
When you have any sort of construction with your main supports in the ground you will have decay occur. In-ground post decay is often misunderstood and a lot of people believe it is cause simply by moisture. It may surprise you to learn that moisture is not the cause of decay but it is a condition that is needed for decay to happen.
The three conditions needed for decay:
- Moisture saturation of wood fiber
- Oxygen
- Temperature between 40-100 degrees
When you have these three conditions then soil fungi will feed on the wood fiber and the decay process begins. Treated lumber that is used for outside and in ground construction is treated with a pesticide that is specifically formulated to envenom the wood fiber so it won’t be a suitable food source for the soil fungi.
